1. Who We Are

This Privacy Policy explains how The Common Good Institute Inc., a New York not-for-profit corporation ("Common Good," "we," or "us"), collects, uses, and shares information through commongood.org (the "Website"). It applies only to the Website. It should be read together with our Terms of Use.

2. Information We Collect

Information you give us. We collect the information you choose to provide, including:

  • Your name and email address when you sign up for our newsletter

  • Your name, email address, and message when you contact us through a form or by email

  • Your name, email address, and donation amount, including whether it is recurring, when you make a donation. Payment details are entered with our donation processor and are not stored by Common Good.

Information collected automatically. When you visit the Website, our website platform and Google Analytics automatically collect standard technical information, such as your IP address, approximate location derived from it, browser and device type, the pages you visit, and the site that referred you. We use this information in aggregate to understand how the Website is used.

3. Cookies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. The Website uses cookies set by our website platform to keep the site working and protect it from abuse, and cookies set by Google Analytics to measure visits. We do not use cookies for advertising. You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. You can set your browser to refuse cookies; some features of the Website may not work properly if you do.

4. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Send our newsletter and updates about our work

  • Respond to your messages

  • Process and acknowledge donations, and provide receipts for tax purposes

  • Understand how the Website is used and improve it

  • Protect the Website against fraud and abuse

  • Comply with our legal obligations

5. How We Share Information

We do not sell or rent your personal information.

We share information only with service providers that help us operate, and only as needed for them to do that work. These include our website platform, which hosts the Website and its forms; Google Analytics, which measures how the Website is used; our donation processor, currently Give Lively; and our email service, currently Mailchimp, which sends our newsletter. Each handles your information under its own privacy policy.

We may also disclose information when required by law or legal process, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Common Good, our users, or the public. If Common Good merges with or transfers its operations to another organization, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy.

6. Your Choices

  • Email: you can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time using the link in any email we send.

  • Your information: you can ask us to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing commongood@commongood.org. We may need to keep some records, such as donation records, to meet legal and accounting requirements.

  • Cookies: you can manage cookies through your browser settings.

7. How Long We Keep Information

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described here. Newsletter information is kept until you unsubscribe. Donation records are kept as long as required for tax, legal, and accounting purposes.

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect the information we hold. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children

The Website is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

10. Third-Party Websites

The Website links to websites we do not control, including news outlets, podcast platforms, booksellers, and our donation processor. This Privacy Policy does not apply to them. Review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised policy on this page and update the effective date above. Changes apply only to information collected after the revised policy takes effect, unless you agree otherwise.
